Body Mass Index with visual health gauge
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measurement using your height and weight to estimate whether you're at a healthy weight. It's calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (kg/m²).
BMI Categories
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
BMI Formula
The BMI formula is: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m²). For imperial units: BMI = (weight in pounds × 703) ÷ height² (inches²). Our calculator handles both conversions automatically.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass, doesn't account for age, gender, or ethnicity differences, and may not be accurate for athletes, elderly individuals, or pregnant women. Always consult a healthcare professional for a complete health assessment.
