How do you find the original value from a percentage?

Reverse percentage — given the result after a percentage change, find the original value.

After increase: Original = Final Value ÷ (1 + % ÷ 100)

After decrease: Original = Final Value ÷ (1 – % ÷ 100)

Why are successive percentage changes a common trap?

When two percentage changes apply in succession, they cannot be simply added. Two 10% increases do not equal a 20% increase.

On $1,000: After +10% = $1,100. After another +10% = $1,210. Total increase = 21%, not 20%.

Combined change formula: Combined % = a + b + (a × b ÷ 100)

Two 10% increases: Combined = 10 + 10 + (10 × 10 ÷ 100) = 10 + 10 + 1 = 21%

What is the difference between percentage and percentile? Percentage is a proportion out of 100 (you scored 85%). Percentile is a ranking — the 85th percentile means you scored better than 85% of all test-takers. A percentile is not a percentage of the total marks.

How do I calculate percentage change when the original value is negative? Percentage change becomes mathematically problematic when the starting value is zero or negative. In financial contexts (profit/loss), special conventions are typically used when comparing negative to positive values.

What is the fastest way to calculate 15% in your head? Find 10% (move decimal left), then find 5% (half of 10%), then add. For $240: 10% = $24, 5% = $12, 15% = $36.

Percentage in everyday finance: the calculations you use most

Mental percentage shortcuts for everyday use

Quick calculation tricks: 10% of any number: move decimal one place left. ₹4,750 → ₹475. 5% = half of 10%. ₹475 ÷ 2 = ₹237.50. 15% = 10% + 5%. ₹475 + ₹237.50 = ₹712.50. 20% = double 10%. ₹475 × 2 = ₹950. 25% = divide by 4. ₹4,750 ÷ 4 = ₹1,187.50. 1% = move decimal two places left. ₹4,750 → ₹47.50. Reverse percentage: finding the original from the result

Reverse percentage (also called "working backwards") finds the original value when you know the percentage change and the result. If ₹750 is the price after a 25% discount, what was the original price? Method: sale price = original × (1 − 25/100) = original × 0.75. So: original = ₹750 ÷ 0.75 = ₹1,000. Common mistakes: many people add 25% to ₹750 to get ₹937.50 — this is wrong because 25% of ₹937.50 ≠ 25% of the original ₹1,000. Always divide by (1 ± rate) to reverse a percentage.
