Common mistakes
Eating at BMR: this means eating at a complete rest level while actually being active โ a severe deficit that causes muscle loss, fatigue, and metabolic adaptation. Always use TDEE minus a moderate deficit.
Overestimating activity: most desk workers with occasional gym sessions are "lightly active" (ร1.375), not "moderately active." Overestimating leads to unintentional calorie surplus. When in doubt, choose the lower multiplier and adjust based on 2โ4 weeks of results.

Why most people overestimate their activity level
The activity multiplier is the biggest source of error in TDEE calculations. Most people choose "Moderately Active" when they should choose "Lightly Active." Research consistently shows that people overestimate exercise intensity and duration by 30โ50%.
Practical test: did you do at least 150 minutes of genuine moderate-intensity exercise this week (where you were slightly breathless and sweating)? If no, you are Sedentary or Lightly Active. A 20-minute walk does not make you "Moderately Active."

Indian dietary patterns and TDEE
Traditional Indian diets are carbohydrate-dominant (rice, roti, dal). For TDEE purposes, the total calorie equation remains the same โ carbs, protein, and fat all contribute 4-4-9 kcal/gram respectively. However, Indian diets often have lower protein content than Western diets, which matters for muscle preservation during a calorie deficit.
A standard Indian meal of 3 rotis + dal + sabzi + curd provides approximately 550โ650 kcal with 18โ22g protein. Hitting 1.6 g/kg protein target on a traditional Indian vegetarian diet requires deliberate inclusion of paneer, chana, moong, curd, and soy.
Summer heat and TDEE in India
Thermoregulation (maintaining body temperature) consumes energy. In India's summer months (40ยฐC+), the body works harder to cool itself, slightly increasing TDEE. This effect is small (50โ100 kcal/day) but explains why outdoor activity in summer feels much harder at the same pace โ perceived exertion, not calorie burn, is the primary difference.
BMR vs TDEE: the evidence base
The Mifflin-St Jeor equation was validated in a landmark 1990 study of 498 subjects and re-validated in a 2005 Journal of the American Dietetic Association meta-analysis covering 3,500 subjects. It predicts BMR within 10% for 82% of non-obese individuals โ the most accurate single-equation estimate available for general use.

How muscle mass and body composition affect BMR
Muscle tissue burns approximately 13 kcal/kg/day at rest. Fat tissue burns approximately 4.5 kcal/kg/day at rest. A person with 50 kg lean mass and 12 kg fat has a resting energy contribution of (50ร13)+(12ร4.5) = 650+54 = 704 kcal just from these tissues (before organ and brain metabolic contribution).
